Omega I - Morris Louis

Omega I belongs to the series of works Morris Louis produced between 1959 and 1960, often categorised as his Stripe paintings. In these compositions, Louis applied Magna, an acrylic resin paint, to unprimed canvas. The pigment soaked into the fabric, creating a flat surface where the colour appears to exist within the weave rather than sitting on top of it. This technique removed the physical evidence of the artist's brushwork, allowing the hues to interact directly with the negative space of the raw canvas. The composition of Omega I features parallel bands of colour arranged along the vertical edges of the canvas. These stripes converge towards the centre, leaving a wide, empty space of unpainted fabric. This void acts as a structural element, balancing the weight of the coloured bands. The colours themselves are varied, ranging from muted earth tones to brighter, saturated pigments. By limiting the application of paint to the periphery, Louis directs the viewer's attention to the interaction between the coloured forms and the central expanse of the canvas. Louis was a member of the Washington Color School, a group of artists who explored the possibilities of colour and its relationship to the picture plane. His approach to painting prioritised the optical experience of colour over traditional notions of form or narrative. By using Magna, which dried quickly and could be thinned to a wash-like consistency, he achieved a clarity of colour that was difficult to replicate with oil paints. This work demonstrates his interest in the physical properties of paint and the way it behaves when applied to a porous surface. The result is a composition that feels both deliberate and spontaneous, where the arrangement of colour dictates the viewer's perception of the entire space.
