A poignant 1890 portrait by Vincent van Gogh depicting an elderly man in a state of grief, painted during the artist's time at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
Painted in May 1890, this work depicts an elderly man sitting on a wooden chair with his head buried in his hands. The subject is Adrianus Jacobus Zuyderland, a pensioner at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Van Gogh based this composition on an earlier lithograph he created in 1882, which was inspired by a drawing titled Worn Out.
The man wears a simple blue suit, his posture suggesting exhaustion or grief. The brushwork is characteristic of Van Gogh's later period, featuring rhythmic, directional strokes that define the form of the clothing and the texture of the wooden floor. The colour palette relies on the contrast between the cool, muted blues of the figure and the warm, earthy tones of the chair, boots, and floorboards. A small fire burns to the left, providing a subtle source of light and warmth in the otherwise sparse room.
Van Gogh produced this painting during his final weeks at the asylum, shortly before his move to Auvers-sur-Oise. It reflects his interest in the human condition and his empathy for those experiencing hardship. The composition is direct, focusing entirely on the figure's physical expression of despair. The lack of decorative elements ensures the viewer's attention remains fixed on the man's gesture. This work remains a clear example of the artist's ability to convey internal states through colour and form, moving away from strict realism toward a more expressive approach to portraiture.
