A vintage photochrom print by William Henry Jackson depicting the eruption of the Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park.
This image captures the Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park during an eruption. Produced as a photochrom print, the work utilises a process that adds colour to black-and-white photographic negatives through multiple lithographic stones. William Henry Jackson, a photographer who documented the American West, created this image during the late nineteenth century. His work provided many citizens with their first visual evidence of the geological wonders found within the newly established national park system.
The composition focuses on the vertical force of the water column against a clear sky. The foreground shows the sinter terrace, a mineral deposit characteristic of the geyser basin, while a line of pine trees provides a horizontal anchor at the base of the eruption. The colour palette is restrained, reflecting the specific chemical limitations and aesthetic choices of the photochrom process. The sky displays a soft, uniform blue, and the steam is rendered with subtle gradations of white and grey.
Jackson travelled extensively with the United States Geological Survey, carrying heavy glass plates and equipment across rugged terrain. His documentation of Yellowstone was instrumental in the legislative efforts to preserve the area. This print offers a view into the historical perception of the American wilderness, presenting the geyser as both a natural curiosity and a subject of scientific observation. The clarity of the image, despite the limitations of the era, allows for a detailed examination of the geyser's structure and the surrounding environment. It remains a record of the park's appearance before the advent of modern colour photography.
