Woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, 'Oiso: Tora-ga-ame (Shower at Tora-ga-ame)' depicts travellers caught in a downpour at Oiso station, part of the series 'Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō'.
Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. He is best known for his depictions of landscapes and scenes of daily life. His work had a marked influence on European artists such as Vincent van Gogh and the Impressionists. Hiroshige's prints often capture the transient beauty of nature and the changing seasons. 'Oiso: Tora-ga-ame (Shower at Tora-ga-ame)' is part of the series 'Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō', depicting scenes along the important road that connected Edo (modern Tokyo) to Kyoto. This print shows travellers caught in a downpour at Oiso station. The driving rain is represented by thin, diagonal lines that dominate the composition. The figures are bent against the wind and rain, their forms simplified and abstracted. The colour palette is restrained, with muted blues, greys, and browns conveying the damp atmosphere. Red accents on the tree trunks and roofs provide a visual counterpoint to the overall somber mood. The print captures a moment of everyday life along the Tōkaidō road, transformed into a scene of atmospheric beauty.
