A moody, atmospheric lithograph by Joseph Pennell depicting the industrial scale of the Standard Oil refinery in Whiting, Indiana.
Joseph Pennell, a prolific printmaker and illustrator, produced this lithograph during his extensive travels across the United States. The work captures the Standard Oil refinery in Whiting, Indiana, a site that fascinated Pennell for its sheer scale and atmospheric density. He was drawn to the aesthetic potential of industrial sites, often finding beauty in the plumes of smoke and the geometric silhouettes of factory infrastructure.
In this print, the artist employs a soft, tonal approach to lithography. The heavy application of ink creates a sense of hazy, polluted air, where the rigid forms of the refinery chimneys are partially obscured by thick clouds. The composition relies on the contrast between the dark, textured smoke and the lighter, vertical elements of the industrial structures. Pennell avoids sharp, clinical lines, opting instead for a more impressionistic rendering of the scene. This technique allows him to convey the overwhelming presence of the refinery without resorting to precise architectural documentation.
Pennell was a vocal proponent of the idea that modern industry offered a new subject matter for artists. He argued that the smoke, steel, and steam of the early twentieth century possessed a visual power comparable to the cathedrals of Europe. This print is a clear expression of that philosophy. By focusing on the Whiting refinery, he transforms a utilitarian landscape into a moody, atmospheric study of light and shadow. The work provides a glimpse into the rapid industrialisation of the American Midwest during the early 1900s, documenting the physical transformation of the environment through a lens that prioritises mood and texture over literal representation.
