John Bauer, a Swedish painter and illustrator, is best known for his illustrations of fairy tales and Norse mythology. His work often blends elements of folklore, symbolism, and the Nordic artistic tradition. Bauer's illustrations are characterised by their imaginative compositions, detailed renderings, and a distinctive atmosphere of mystery and enchantment. He was influenced by the Arts and Crafts movement and the National Romantic style, which sought to revive traditional Nordic motifs and themes. 'Odin and Sleipnir' depicts the Norse god Odin riding his eight-legged horse, Sleipnir. The illustration is rendered in a monochromatic palette, with shades of grey and black creating a dramatic and ethereal effect. Odin, clad in armour and a winged helmet, holds a spear as he rides Sleipnir across the sky. Below them, a shadowy underworld is suggested, adding to the sense of foreboding and the supernatural. The composition is divided into two distinct registers: the upper realm of sky and the lower realm of darkness, separated by a horizon line of turbulent waves.
