A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige showing the coastal path at Odawara, featuring travellers and fishermen along the Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the post station of Odawara, a stop along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. The composition features a coastal path lined with pine trees, framing a view of the sea. In the distance, a group of figures pulls a net along the shoreline, while travellers in traditional attire walk along the foreground path. The inclusion of kyoka, or comic verse, identifies this specific edition as the Kyoka iri Tokaido series, which integrated poetry with the visual narrative of the journey.
Hiroshige employs a balanced colour palette, using deep blues for the water and muted greens for the coastal vegetation. The trees are rendered with distinct, textured bark, providing a sense of age and stability against the horizontal expanse of the sea. The figures are small in scale, emphasising the vastness of the coastal environment. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to capture the atmosphere of a specific location while maintaining the graphic clarity characteristic of the Ukiyo-e tradition.
The Tokaido series remains one of the most recognised bodies of work in Japanese art history. By documenting the various stations, Hiroshige provided a visual record of travel during the Edo period. This print captures the quiet rhythm of daily life, from the labour of the fishermen to the movement of pedestrians. The integration of text and image creates a layered experience, inviting the viewer to read the poem while observing the scene. This print is a fine example of the technical precision achieved by the carvers and printers who collaborated with Hiroshige to produce these works.
