A detailed seventeenth-century etching of the Roman Nymphaeum of Alexander Severus, capturing the architectural ruins with precise line work.
This etching depicts the ruins of the Nymphaeum of Alexander Severus, a structure historically misidentified in the seventeenth century as the Castello dell'Acqua Marcia. Giovanni Giacomo de' Rossi, a prominent Roman publisher and printmaker, produced this work as part of a broader documentation of the city's classical remains. The composition captures the weathered masonry of the structure, which sits atop a mound, framed by the arched remnants of the ancient Roman water distribution system.
The print displays the characteristic precision of seventeenth-century architectural documentation. Fine cross-hatching defines the textures of the crumbling stone and the surrounding vegetation, while the sky is rendered with delicate, parallel lines to suggest atmospheric depth. Two figures are positioned in the foreground, providing a sense of scale against the imposing height of the ruins. The inclusion of the Trophies of Marius, which were once associated with this site, adds a layer of historical narrative to the visual record.
De' Rossi operated from the Stamperia de Rossi in Rome, a hub for the dissemination of topographical and antiquarian prints. His work reflects the period's fascination with the physical remnants of antiquity, often blending accurate observation with the romanticised aesthetic of the ruin. The text at the base of the plate provides topographical context, identifying nearby roads such as the Via Tiburtina and the Via Prenestina. This print serves as a record of how the Roman landscape appeared to scholars and travellers during the Baroque era, documenting the state of these monuments before later archaeological interventions. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition make this an example of the high standards maintained by the Roman print trade during the late seventeenth century.
