A study of a female nude by the Venetian painter Giulia Lama, featuring dramatic chiaroscuro and a sculptural approach to the human form.
Giulia Lama remains a singular figure within the Venetian school of the early eighteenth century. Active in a period when professional opportunities for female painters were restricted, she established a reputation for her bold, expressive approach to the human form. This study of a female nude demonstrates her characteristic handling of light and shadow, which often leans towards a dramatic, tenebrist quality.
The composition focuses on the back of a standing figure, captured in a moment of movement as she reaches towards a draped fabric. Lama employs a muscular, almost sculptural treatment of the anatomy, departing from the softer, more idealised depictions common among her contemporaries. The play of light across the spine and legs creates a sense of volume, while the deep blue of the cloth provides a stark contrast to the warm, pale tones of the skin. The background remains dark and indistinct, ensuring the viewer's attention stays fixed upon the physical presence of the subject.
Lama's work is frequently associated with the influence of Piazzetta, yet she maintains a distinct stylistic identity. Her brushwork is confident and direct, showing little interest in the decorative polish that defined much of the Rococo period. Instead, she prioritises the structural integrity of the figure and the emotional weight of the pose. This print captures the texture of the original canvas, preserving the subtle variations in tone that define her approach to chiaroscuro. It is a representative example of her ability to render the human body with both technical precision and a sense of raw, unadorned reality. The work offers a glimpse into the output of an artist who operated outside the conventional boundaries of her time, producing paintings that possess a quiet, persistent authority.
