A modernist study of a female figure by Danish artist Vilhelm Lundstrøm, featuring simplified geometric forms and a balanced, introspective composition.
Vilhelm Lundstrøm was a central figure in Danish Modernism, known for his rigorous approach to form and composition. This work displays the characteristics of his mature style, where the human figure is reduced to its essential geometric components. The subject is rendered with a focus on volume and mass, moving away from descriptive detail towards a more structural interpretation of the body.
The figure is positioned against a dark, atmospheric background that pushes the form forward. Lundstrøm employs a palette of soft, flesh-toned hues for the body, which contrast with the deep, cool blues of the surrounding space. The lighting is deliberate, creating subtle shadows that define the curvature of the torso and the angle of the arm. The pose, with the hand resting against the face, introduces a sense of quiet introspection.
Lundstrøm spent significant time in France during the early 1920s, where he engaged with the developments of Cubism and Purism. This influence is visible in the simplified planes of the face and the deliberate, almost architectural, arrangement of the limbs. He avoids unnecessary ornamentation, preferring to let the interplay of light and shadow describe the physical presence of the subject. The result is a composition that feels balanced and contained, reflecting the artist's interest in order and clarity. This print captures the smooth transitions of tone and the specific colour relationships that define Lundstrøm's approach to the figure during this period of his career.
