Real reviews from real customers
William Etty, a Yorkshireman through and through, defied expectations to become one of the most celebrated British painters of the 19th century. Born in 1787, his path wasn't straightforward; a childhood spent as a printer's apprentice hardly screamed 'future Royal Academician'. Yet, Etty harboured a burning desire to paint, and he pursued it with a single-mindedness that eventually led him to London and the hallowed halls of the Royal Academy. Etty's artistic obsession was the nude. In an era of buttoned-up Victorian morality, his unapologetic celebration of the human form, particularly the female nude, was both controversial and revolutionary. He drew inspiration from the Old Masters, especially Venetian painters like Titian and Veronese, whose rich colours and sensual forms he emulated. Works such as 'Youth on the Prow, and Pleasure at the Helm' and 'The Combat: Woman Pleading for the Vanquished' exemplify his mastery of colour and dramatic composition. Though criticised by some for his unwavering focus, Etty's talent was undeniable. He paved the way for future generations of artists to explore the human form with greater freedom. Today, William Etty's paintings offer a glimpse into a Victorian art world grappling with classical ideals and changing social mores, making his works both beautiful and historically significant additions to any collection.
