A reclining nude figure is set within a field of stylised flowers and foliage. The composition uses broad brushstrokes and simplified forms, typical of Expressionist painting.
Franz Marc (1880-1916) was a German painter and printmaker, a central figure of the German Expressionist movement. He was a founder of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), a group of artists united in their desire to express spiritual truths through art. Marc's work often featured animals, which he believed possessed a purity and connection to nature that humans had lost. He died in World War I at the age of 36. 'Nude Lying in the Flowers' presents a reclining nude figure set within a field of stylised flowers and foliage. The figure, rendered in soft pinks, rests on a white cloth, blending into the surrounding vegetation. The composition uses broad brushstrokes and simplified forms, typical of Expressionist painting. The colour palette is dominated by greens, pinks, and yellows, creating a sense of harmony and natural beauty. The painting departs from traditional academic nudes, instead integrating the figure into the natural world, reflecting Marc's interest in the relationship between humans and nature.
