A fine mezzotint engraving of Norham Castle by J.M.W. Turner, capturing the atmospheric light and rural character of the River Tweed.
This print is a plate from the 'Rivers of England' series, a project that occupied J.M.W. Turner during the 1820s. The original composition, rendered in mezzotint by Charles Turner, captures the ruins of Norham Castle perched above the River Tweed. The artist held a lifelong fascination with this specific site, having sketched it multiple times throughout his career.
In this version, the castle silhouette dominates the horizon, set against a sky filled with atmospheric light. The foreground features the riverbank, where cattle graze and figures attend to small boats. The use of mezzotint allows for a wide range of tonal values, from the deep shadows of the castle walls to the reflective, shimmering surface of the water. This technique creates a sense of depth and mood, characteristic of the Romantic approach to British topography.
The print reflects the technical precision of early 19th-century steel engraving, which enabled finer detail than traditional copper plates. The composition balances the architectural weight of the fortress with the fluid, organic movement of the river. By focusing on the interplay between light and shadow, the work conveys a sense of quietude and historical permanence. This piece provides an insight into how Turner translated his watercolour studies into reproducible formats for a wider audience, maintaining the atmospheric quality of his original sketches while adapting to the demands of the print medium.
