Taken by Édouard Denis Baldus during the mid-nineteenth century, the image documents the expansion of the Louvre commissioned by Napoleon III. Baldus, a photographer known for his technical rigour, utilised large-format glass plate negatives to record the stone masonry with exceptional clarity.

The composition focuses on the vertical rhythm of the facade. The viewer observes the repetition of windows, pilasters, and decorative relief panels that define the Second Empire style. Baldus positions his camera to maintain a parallel alignment with the wall, which minimises perspective distortion and allows the viewer to examine the texture of the carved stone and the geometry of the circular attic windows.
