A detailed etching and engraving by Domenico Cunego, depicting the biblical scene of Noah's sacrifice based on the work of Michelangelo.
This print by Domenico Cunego reproduces a scene depicting the biblical account of Noah offering a sacrifice after the flood. The composition is based on the work of Michelangelo, specifically referencing the frescoes within the Sistine Chapel. Cunego, a skilled Italian engraver, employs precise line work to translate the muscularity and dramatic poses characteristic of Michelangelo into the medium of printmaking.
The scene shows a group of figures gathered around an altar. Noah is positioned centrally, his posture reflecting the solemnity of the act. The figures are rendered with anatomical clarity, typical of the Neoclassical interest in classical form and proportion. The use of cross-hatching and varied line weights creates a sense of volume and depth, allowing the figures to emerge from the background. The inclusion of the sacrificial animal and the bundles of wood provides narrative detail, grounding the scene in the biblical text inscribed at the base of the print.
Cunego was active in Rome, where he produced numerous prints after the Old Masters. His work often served to disseminate the compositions of famous painters to a wider audience of collectors and students. This particular engraving demonstrates the technical rigour of the period, with a focus on clarity of form and balanced composition. The Latin inscription provides the scriptural context, identifying the source as Genesis 8. The print is a fine example of the reproductive engraving tradition that flourished in eighteenth-century Italy, where the goal was to maintain the integrity of the original design while adapting it to the constraints of the copper plate. The print captures the gravity of the subject matter through a controlled, academic approach to light and shadow.
