A classic woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige from the Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido series, depicting a quiet riverside stop at Shionata.
This woodblock print is part of the series Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido, a collaborative project between Utagawa Hiroshige and Keisai Eisen. The series documents the journey along the Kisokaido, an inland route connecting Edo and Kyoto. This specific sheet depicts Shionata, a station situated along the banks of the Usui River.
Hiroshige employs a balanced composition to capture the quiet atmosphere of the riverside stop. In the foreground, travellers are shown resting near a simple thatched-roof tea house. The figures are rendered with characteristic simplicity, their postures suggesting the fatigue of a long journey. To the left, the river flows steadily, its surface depicted with subtle gradations of blue ink. A large, gnarled tree anchors the centre of the image, providing shade for the structure and framing the distant mountain range.
The colour palette relies on muted earth tones, soft greens, and varying shades of indigo. The sky transitions from a pale yellow at the horizon to a darker tone above, suggesting the approach of dusk. This use of bokashi, or colour gradation, is a hallmark of Hiroshige's technical approach to woodblock printing. The print captures a moment of stillness, reflecting the daily life of travellers during the Edo period. The attention to atmospheric conditions, such as the light at day's end, demonstrates the artist's ability to imbue a topographical scene with a specific mood. This work remains a significant example of the ukiyo-e tradition, documenting the geography and social customs of nineteenth-century Japan through the medium of the printed image.
