No. 19: Karuizawa - Utagawa Hiroshige

This woodblock print is part of the series Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido, a collaborative project between Utagawa Hiroshige and Keisai Eisen. The series documents the journey along the Kisokaido, an inland route connecting Edo and Kyoto. Hiroshige, a master of the Ukiyo-e tradition, brings his characteristic attention to atmospheric conditions and human activity to this depiction of Karuizawa.

The composition captures a nocturnal scene at the nineteenth station. Two travellers and their horse pause near a large tree, where a fire burns at the base. The smoke rises in vertical plumes, cutting through the dark, moody sky. The figures are rendered with precise detail, their clothing patterns and postures suggesting the weariness of long-distance travel. The horse, burdened with luggage, stands patiently while one traveller tends to the fire and the other smokes a pipe.

Hiroshige employs a muted palette, dominated by deep greens, charcoal greys, and earthy browns, to convey the stillness of the night. The contrast between the dark surroundings and the warm glow of the fire provides a sense of intimacy within the vast, open terrain. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with Hiroshige, particularly in the subtle gradations of the sky and the texture of the foliage.
