A striking portrait by Andres de Santa Maria, featuring a young boy in a green garment set against a bold, textured red background.
Andres de Santa Maria, a central figure in the development of modern art in Colombia, spent significant periods of his career in Europe, particularly in France. This portrait, Niño vestido de verde, reflects the influence of European Impressionist techniques on his practice. The work is defined by a heavy application of paint, where the texture of the brushwork creates a tactile quality across the surface of the canvas.
The composition is direct and intimate. The subject, a young boy, is positioned centrally against a flat, intense red background. This choice of colour creates a stark contrast with the dark, textured green of the boy's garment. Santa Maria avoids precise, academic rendering in favour of a more atmospheric approach. The features of the face are constructed through small, broken strokes of colour, which allow the viewer's eye to blend the tones from a distance. This method of paint application is characteristic of his later period, where he moved away from the rigid structures of his early training in Paris.
Santa Maria was known for his independence from the traditional artistic circles of his time. His work often prioritised the emotional resonance of colour and light over strict anatomical accuracy. In this portrait, the red background acts as a psychological space, isolating the figure and drawing attention to the boy's gaze. The lack of environmental detail ensures that the focus remains entirely on the subject, making the painting a study in colour theory and light. The work demonstrates his ability to balance the formal requirements of portraiture with a personal, expressive style that was ahead of its time in the Colombian context.
