A fine ink illustration by Zhao Mengfu depicting the Lady of the Xiang, rendered in the traditional baimiao style with elegant, flowing lines.
This work is a leaf from an album illustrating the Nine Songs, a collection of ancient Chinese poems attributed to Qu Yuan. Zhao Mengfu, a scholar-official of the Yuan Dynasty, employed the baimiao technique, which relies on fine, uncoloured ink lines to define form. This method prioritises clarity and calligraphic precision over tonal variation or colour. The figure depicted is the Lady of the Xiang, a deity associated with the Xiang River. She stands with a composed posture, her robes rendered in fluid, rhythmic lines that suggest movement against the water. The surrounding space remains largely empty, a characteristic of the literati style that values restraint and the expressive quality of the brushstroke.
The integration of text and image is central to this composition. The calligraphy, executed in a balanced, elegant script, occupies the left panel, while the figure occupies the right. This arrangement reflects the traditional Chinese practice of combining poetry and painting to create a unified aesthetic experience. The red seals visible on the paper indicate the work's provenance and the appreciation of later collectors who valued Zhao Mengfu's contribution to the revival of classical styles. By looking back to the traditions of the Tang and Song dynasties, Zhao Mengfu sought to restore a sense of intellectual depth to the art of his time. This print captures the subtle tension between the static figure and the undulating lines of the water, demonstrating the artist's control over the brush. The work serves as an example of the scholarly pursuit of refinement, where the simplicity of the materials allows the skill of the artist to remain the primary focus for the viewer.
