A moody, atmospheric etching by Charles-François Daubigny depicting a solitary figure in a boat on a dark river at night.
Charles-François Daubigny was a central figure in the Barbizon School, known for his direct observation of nature and his innovative approach to printmaking. This etching, titled Night Voyage, or Fishing with a Line, captures the quiet solitude of the French waterways. Daubigny famously converted a small boat into a floating studio, which he named Le Botin. This vessel allowed him to navigate the Oise and Seine rivers, observing the shifting light and atmosphere from the water level.
The composition is defined by its atmospheric density. The sky and water are rendered through a series of short, horizontal, and cross-hatched lines that create a sense of deep, nocturnal stillness. The small boat, with its cabin and solitary figure, acts as a point of human presence within the vast, dark expanse of the river. The print demonstrates Daubigny's technical mastery of the etching needle, using varying line weights to suggest the reflection of the boat on the water and the silhouette of the distant treeline against the night sky.
Unlike the highly polished academic works of his contemporaries, Daubigny's prints often retain a sketch-like quality that prioritises mood and immediate experience. The collaboration with the printer Auguste Delâtre, whose name appears in the lower right margin, was essential to achieving the tonal depth seen in this impression. The ink work creates a heavy, immersive atmosphere, drawing the viewer into the quiet rhythm of the river at night. This work reflects the artist's deep connection to the rural French environment, a subject he returned to throughout his career. It is a study in light and shadow, capturing a fleeting moment of calm on the water.
