A dark, atmospheric work by Arshile Gorky featuring fluid, biomorphic forms that explore themes of memory and the subconscious.
Night-time, Enigma, and Nostalgia represents a formative period in the career of Arshile Gorky. During the early 1930s, Gorky moved away from his earlier focus on the structure of Cézanne and the synthetic cubism of Picasso. He began to explore the fluid, biomorphic forms that would later define his mature style. This work displays a dark, atmospheric quality, where shapes emerge from a dense, shadowed background.
The composition is dominated by ambiguous, organic forms that suggest anatomical or botanical origins without explicitly defining them. Gorky uses a restricted palette of deep browns, blacks, and muted ochres to create a sense of mystery. The application of paint varies from thin, translucent washes to thicker, textured areas, providing a tactile quality to the surface. The interplay between light and shadow creates a shallow, dreamlike space, characteristic of the surrealist interest in the subconscious mind.
This piece reflects Gorky's personal history and his attempt to reconcile his Armenian heritage with the modern art movements he encountered in New York. The title itself points to the emotional weight he attached to his work, linking memory and personal experience to the act of painting. By stripping away representational clarity, Gorky invites the viewer to engage with the work on an intuitive level. The forms appear to shift and transform, mirroring the elusive nature of memory and the psychological states suggested by the title. This work is a significant example of the transition from European modernism to the development of American abstract painting, showing the artist as he began to forge his own visual language.
