An original engraving by William Blake from his 1797 series illustrating Edward Young's poem, Night Thoughts.
This engraving originates from William Blake's ambitious project to illustrate Edward Young's poem, The Complaint, and the Consolation; or, Night Thoughts. Commissioned by the publisher Richard Edwards in 1795, the project occupied Blake for two years. He produced over five hundred watercolours, though only a small portion were eventually engraved for the published volume.
The composition features a central text block surrounded by Blake's characteristic linear style. Below the text, a figure in a toga leans over a mother and child, a scene that reflects the moral and existential themes present in Young's verse. Blake employs a delicate, calligraphic line quality to define the musculature of the figures and the folds of the drapery. The surrounding architectural elements and the faint, ethereal figures at the top of the page demonstrate his approach to integrating text with visual narrative.
Blake's work on Night Thoughts represents a period of intense creative output. His illustrations do not merely decorate the text; they provide a visual counterpoint to Young's meditations on death, time, and human folly. The engraving technique allows for a precise, monochromatic rendering that emphasises the sculptural quality of the figures. This print offers a glimpse into the collaborative process between poet and artist, capturing the aesthetic sensibilities of late eighteenth-century British printmaking. The work remains a primary example of Blake's ability to synthesise literary content with his own visionary iconography, maintaining a balance between the physical reality of the figures and the abstract nature of the poetic subject matter.
