A delicate graphite sketch by Dutch artist Jac van Looij, capturing a group of figures in hooded garments with fluid, minimalist lines.
This graphite sketch by the Dutch artist Jac van Looij captures a scene of figures gathered in hooded garments. The work, titled Nieuwjaar tussen arabieren, reflects the artist's observational approach to his travels. Van Looij, a central figure in the Tachtigers movement, often employed a rapid, fluid line to document his surroundings. His style here is characterised by economy of mark, where minimal strokes define the heavy folds of fabric and the posture of the individuals.
The composition is sparse, focusing on the group of figures standing in a loose formation. The artist uses light, gestural lines to suggest the environment, leaving much of the paper surface blank. This technique directs the viewer's attention to the silhouettes of the figures, who appear to be engaged in a quiet, collective activity. The inscription in the lower right corner provides context, noting the occasion of the New Year and the location, which appears to be near Schermer, a region in the Netherlands. This suggests the work may be a metaphorical or observational record of a specific local event or a personal memory associated with the date.
Van Looij was known for his literary and artistic contributions, and his visual work often shares the atmospheric quality found in his prose. This sketch provides a view into his process, showing how he captured fleeting moments with direct, unadorned draughtsmanship. The lack of heavy shading or complex perspective allows the viewer to focus on the rhythmic repetition of the hooded forms. It is a quiet, understated piece that documents a specific moment in time through the lens of a keen observer.
