A delicate pastel study of the American Falls by William Morris Hunt, capturing the atmospheric mist and power of the water through a tonalist lens.
William Morris Hunt, a central figure in the introduction of French Barbizon aesthetics to American art, produced this study of Niagara Falls during the final years of his career. The work captures the immense power of the American Falls through a soft, atmospheric application of pastel. Hunt focuses on the interplay between the solid rock formations and the ethereal, mist-filled air that characterises the site.
His technique relies on the tactile quality of the medium to suggest the turbulent movement of water. The palette remains restrained, favouring muted greens, earthy browns, and whites to convey the damp, cool environment. Unlike the highly detailed, panoramic depictions of Niagara common in the mid-nineteenth century, Hunt chooses a more intimate perspective. He prioritises the sensory experience of the location over topographical accuracy. The composition draws the eye toward the centre, where the water descends into a haze of spray, effectively blurring the boundary between the natural elements.
This piece reflects Hunt's interest in tonalism, a style that emphasises mood and atmosphere through subtle colour transitions. The rough edges of the paper and the visible marks of the pastel suggest this was a direct observation or a preparatory study for larger works. By focusing on the shifting light and the density of the mist, Hunt creates a sense of immediacy. The work provides a glimpse into his process, where the artist sought to capture the fleeting nature of light and motion rather than a static representation of the scene. It remains a representative example of his later work, where he moved away from formal portraiture toward more expressive, nature-based subjects.
