A detailed Victorian colour print by George Baxter depicting a family receiving news and money from a relative who has emigrated to Australia.
George Baxter, a pioneer of colour printing in the nineteenth century, produced this image to capture a specific social phenomenon of the 1850s. The print depicts a family gathered in a rustic interior, reacting to a letter received from a relative who has emigrated to Australia. The central figure reads the correspondence aloud, while the others express joy and relief. A banknote is visible, suggesting the economic success of the emigrant.
Baxter utilised his patented process, which involved a combination of an intaglio key plate and multiple relief blocks to apply colour. This method allowed for a level of tonal variation and detail that was previously difficult to achieve in mass-produced imagery. The scene is filled with domestic objects, such as a fireplace, a spinning wheel, and tools, which ground the narrative in the everyday life of the working class. A poster on the wall advertising emigration on the ship 'Hope' provides historical context, referencing the gold rush era that prompted many British citizens to seek opportunities in the colonies.
The composition is arranged to draw the eye toward the letter, the focal point of the family's collective attention. Baxter's attention to texture, from the fabric of the clothing to the wooden floorboards, demonstrates his technical precision. This work functions as a visual record of the migration patterns that defined the mid-Victorian period, reflecting the hopes and anxieties associated with travel to the antipodes. The print was widely circulated, making it an accessible piece of visual storytelling for the public of the time.
