Description

A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the folklore of foxfires gathering under a tree on New Year's Eve in Edo.

This print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige during the final years of his career. The image depicts a local legend from the Ōji district, where foxes were said to gather under a large hackberry tree on New Year's Eve. According to folklore, these foxes would emit ghostly flames, known as kitsunebi, as they prepared to visit the Oji Inari Shrine. Hiroshige uses a dark, atmospheric palette to convey the stillness of a winter night. The deep indigo sky, rendered with a subtle bokashi gradient, contrasts with the warm, flickering lights emanating from the foxes. The composition is anchored by the gnarled, dark silhouette of the tree, which provides a vertical structure against the expansive, shadowed field. The small, pale figures of the foxes are arranged in a naturalistic yet rhythmic manner, drawing the eye across the foreground toward the distant, glowing lights of other foxes in the background. Technically, the print demonstrates the mastery of the woodblock medium, particularly in the application of colour and the precision of the line work. The artist captures the transition between the physical world and the supernatural realm through the use of light and shadow. This work remains a significant example of Hiroshige's ability to imbue a specific geographic location with a sense of mystery and narrative depth. The print reflects the cultural fascination with folklore and the changing seasons in Edo-period Japan, offering a glimpse into the traditions that defined the local identity of the Ōji area.
