The work depicts a narrative scene involving Nanda and Vasudeva, figures central to the ancient Sanskrit text detailing the life of Lord Vishnu. The composition is divided into two distinct registers, a common convention in early Indian manuscript illustration.

The upper register presents a group of figures arranged against alternating red and green backgrounds. The characters are depicted in profile, with sharp facial features and expressive gestures. Their attire, including dhotis and jewellery, is rendered with precise detail. The architectural setting is suggested through simple, flat planes of colour, avoiding the use of linear perspective. The figures interact in a manner that conveys the narrative tension of the meeting.

The lower register features a large, ornate cart or chariot, positioned horizontally across the frame. The vehicle is decorated with geometric patterns and floral motifs, set against a dark ground. Below this, a narrow strip illustrates a pond filled with lotus flowers and waterfowl, providing a naturalistic border to the scene. The palette is dominated by primary colours, including deep red, yellow, and green, which are applied in flat, opaque layers.
