A fine art print of a classic Ottoman calligraphy piece by Hafiz Osman, featuring the name of Allah surrounded by traditional floral illumination.
This work displays the mastery of Hafiz Osman, an Ottoman calligrapher who refined the Thuluth and Naskh scripts during the late 17th century. The central composition features the name of Allah rendered in a balanced, rhythmic script. The precision of the ink strokes demonstrates the technical rigour required in the tradition of Ottoman penmanship, where the proportions of each letter are governed by strict geometric rules.
The central calligraphy is enclosed within a circular frame, which is surrounded by an illuminated border. This border incorporates floral motifs, including stylised tulips and delicate foliage, executed in a manner consistent with the illumination practices of the period. The use of gold leaf and subtle earth tones provides a visual harmony that directs the viewer toward the central text. The composition relies on the contrast between the bold, dark ink of the script and the lighter, decorative elements of the surrounding illumination.
Hafiz Osman is recognised for his contributions to the development of the Hilye, a form of calligraphic panel that describes the physical and moral attributes of the Prophet. While this specific piece focuses on the name of Allah, it shares the same aesthetic principles found in his larger works. The clarity of the script and the restraint shown in the decorative border reflect the standards of the Istanbul school of calligraphy. This print captures the fine details of the original manuscript, preserving the texture of the paper and the application of the pigments. It is a representative example of the high level of craftsmanship achieved by Ottoman artists during this era, where the written word was treated as a primary form of visual art.
