This woodblock print by Gosōtei Hirosada depicts the celebrated Kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon IV in the role of Karaki Masaemon. The work originates from the series A Tale of Valor at Iga Pass, a narrative rooted in the dramatic traditions of the Kamigata region, which encompassed Osaka and Kyoto. Unlike the larger-scale prints produced in Edo, Osaka-school prints often favoured a more intimate, character-focused approach to the theatrical arts.
Hirosada captures the actor in a moment of quiet tension. The figure is dressed in a deep indigo kimono, contrasting with the muted red of the architectural backdrop. He carries a large, circular hat and a lantern, props that define his character's journey through the night. The composition is flat, typical of the Ukiyo-e style, where the focus remains on the graphic quality of the lines and the balance of colour fields. The actor's expression is rendered with precision, reflecting the specific makeup and stylised features associated with the Kabuki stage.
