A woodblock print by Utagawa Kunimasu depicting the kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon IV as the character Danshichi Kurobei, featuring detailed tattoo motifs.
This woodblock print depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Utaemon IV in the role of the character Danshichi Kurobei. Utagawa Kunimasu, a practitioner of the Kamigata-e style based in Osaka, captures the actor with a focus on facial expression and costume detail. The print belongs to the yakusha-e genre, which documents the appearance of performers in specific roles during the Edo period.
The subject, Danshichi Kurobei, is a figure from the play 'Natsu Matsuri Naniwa Kagami' (Summer Festival: A Mirror of Osaka). The actor is shown with his arms crossed, revealing elaborate tattoos on his forearms, a visual marker of the character's status as a commoner with a rough, heroic nature. The composition is tight, focusing on the upper torso and head, which allows the viewer to observe the specific makeup and the stylised features typical of the period's theatrical portraiture.
Kunimasu employs a controlled colour palette, using blue and black as the primary tones for the garment, which contrasts with the pale skin of the actor. The lines are precise, defining the contours of the face and the patterns of the tattoos. The background is a flat, muted grey, which pushes the figure forward and removes any distraction from the actor's intense gaze. This work provides a record of the theatrical culture of 19th-century Japan, specifically the Osaka school of printmaking, which often favoured a more realistic approach to actor portraiture compared to the more stylised works produced in Edo. The print is a clear example of how woodblock artists documented the ephemeral nature of live performance, preserving the likeness of actors for an audience of theatre enthusiasts and collectors.
