A serene woodblock print by Hasui Kawase capturing the spring atmosphere of Myohon Temple in Kamakura, framed by the temple's wooden veranda.
This woodblock print by Hasui Kawase depicts the grounds of Myohon Temple in Kamakura. Kawase, a central figure in the Shin-hanga movement, produced this work in 1933. The composition employs a framing device: the viewer looks out from the shaded wooden veranda of a temple building. This architectural element creates a strong sense of depth, contrasting the dark, geometric lines of the porch with the organic forms of the temple garden beyond.
To the left, a large cherry tree is in full bloom, its mass of pink blossoms providing a counterpoint to the deep red of the temple gate in the background. The scene includes small figures of visitors walking through the courtyard, which adds a sense of scale and quiet human presence to the sacred space. A bronze lantern stands on the veranda, its form silhouetted against the bright garden. The play of light and shadow is a hallmark of Kawase's approach, as he captures the specific atmosphere of a spring day in Kamakura.
Kawase worked closely with the publisher Watanabe Shozaburo to revitalise the traditional ukiyo-e woodblock process. His prints often focus on the interplay between traditional Japanese architecture and the changing seasons. This work demonstrates his technical precision in layering colours to achieve subtle gradations in the sky and the textured wood of the temple structure. The print reflects a period of Japanese art that sought to maintain traditional craftsmanship while adopting Western concepts of perspective and atmospheric light.
