A delicate watercolour and ink illustration from the personal album of Gesina ter Borch, depicting a shepherd couple engaged in music and reading.
This work by Gesina ter Borch originates from her personal album, a collection of drawings, poems, and songs that offer a window into the cultural life of a seventeenth-century Dutch woman. The composition features a shepherd and shepherdess seated beneath a tree, a common motif in pastoral literature and art of the period. The male figure plays a violin, while the female figure holds a book, suggesting a scene of courtly or romantic recreation. The text above the illustration is written in a precise, calligraphic hand, integrating the visual and literary elements into a single page.
Ter Borch was a member of a prominent artistic family in Zwolle. Her work often reflects the domestic and social interests of her circle, frequently incorporating themes of love, music, and nature. The watercolour application is delicate, using soft washes to define the figures and the surrounding environment. The background features a simplified horizon line with a distant town silhouette, typical of the period's approach to spatial depth in small-scale illustrations. The figures are rendered with attention to their period attire, including the shepherd's hat and the woman's yellow gown. This piece is a fine example of the amateur yet highly skilled artistic production found in private albums of the Dutch Golden Age, where personal expression and literary engagement were closely linked. The preservation of such albums allows for a better understanding of the private creative practices of women during this era, moving beyond the public sphere of professional painting.
