A detailed Baroque frontispiece featuring a Muse and putti surrounding a portrait of the Dutch surgeon and poet Govard Bidloo.
This etching and engraving serves as the frontispiece for the collected poetry of Govard Bidloo, a Dutch surgeon, anatomist, and poet. The composition is a classic example of Baroque allegory, designed to elevate the status of the subject by surrounding his portrait with mythological figures.
At the centre, a portrait of Bidloo is held aloft by a group of putti, one of whom plays a trumpet to announce his literary achievements. Below them sits a Muse, identified by her lyre and laurel wreath, who gestures toward the portrait. The scene is populated with further symbolic elements, including a putto holding a scythe, a reference to the passage of time, and swans near a pool. The foreground features an open book and a writing lamp, reinforcing the theme of scholarly pursuit and poetic creation.
The work is signed by Frans van Mieris the Younger as the designer and F. Bleyswyck as the engraver, with Johan Arnold Langerak acting as the publisher. The technical execution demonstrates the precision typical of early eighteenth-century Dutch printmaking, with fine cross-hatching used to create depth in the clouds and the drapery of the Muse. The balance between the realistic portrait and the fantastical, allegorical surroundings is characteristic of the period, where such frontispieces were common in high-quality literary publications. This print offers a view into the intellectual culture of the Dutch Republic, where medical professionals were often also active participants in the literary arts.
