A detailed 1530 engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever depicting the Roman hero Mucius Scaevola demonstrating his resolve before King Lars Porsena.
This engraving by Heinrich Aldegrever depicts the Roman legend of Gaius Mucius Scaevola. The narrative centres on the Roman hero who attempted to assassinate the Etruscan king Lars Porsena during the siege of Rome. Upon his capture, Mucius demonstrated his resolve by thrusting his right hand into a sacrificial fire, an act of defiance that earned him the cognomen Scaevola, meaning left-handed.
Aldegrever, a member of the group known as the Little Masters, demonstrates his technical proficiency through precise line work and cross-hatching. The composition is structured around the central figure of Mucius, who stands with a muscular, athletic physique typical of the period's interest in classical anatomy. To his right, the king sits upon a throne, observing the scene with a crown upon his head. A kneeling figure is positioned to the left, adding depth to the foreground. The inclusion of a brazier containing flames serves as the focal point for the narrative action.
The architectural background, featuring arched structures and distant buildings, provides a sense of spatial depth. Aldegrever uses the burin to create varied textures, from the smooth skin of the figures to the rougher surfaces of the stone and the flickering quality of the fire. The date 1530 is visible on a tablet in the lower right corner, accompanied by the artist's monogram. This work reflects the Northern Renaissance fascination with classical history, interpreted through the lens of contemporary printmaking techniques. The clarity of the figures and the controlled use of light and shadow demonstrate the artist's ability to convey complex moral narratives within a small format. This print is a characteristic example of the high level of detail achieved by German engravers during the sixteenth century.
