An etching by Johann Adam Klein depicting a rural scene of men toasting to the 1827 wine harvest beside a wagon of must barrels.
This etching by Johann Adam Klein captures a moment of rural social life in early nineteenth-century Germany. The scene depicts a wagon laden with barrels of must, the freshly pressed grape juice that precedes fermentation into wine. A sign attached to the wagon reads 'guten 1826 Most', indicating the quality of the previous year's harvest. Two men sit on barrels, raising their glasses in a toast, while a small dog drinks from a bowl in the foreground. The composition is balanced, with the heavy wagon and horses on the left providing a stable anchor for the more animated figures on the right.
Klein was a prolific printmaker, known for his keen observation of everyday life, animals, and the rural customs of his time. His work often reflects the Biedermeier aesthetic, which prioritised domesticity, realism, and the quiet dignity of common activities. The etching technique allows for fine detail, particularly in the rendering of the horses' musculature and the texture of the wooden barrels. The inscription at the bottom, 'Auf einen guten 27ger Jahrgang', serves as a toast to the 1827 vintage, situating the work firmly within the context of agricultural celebration.
This print offers a glimpse into the social rituals associated with viticulture. The figures are dressed in the practical attire of the period, and their posture suggests a relaxed pause during a day of labour. Klein's ability to convey character through simple line work is evident here, as the men's expressions and gestures communicate a sense of camaraderie. The inclusion of the dog and the various tools scattered on the ground adds a layer of authenticity to the scene, grounding the viewer in the physical reality of the rural setting. It is a precise documentation of a specific cultural practice, rendered with the technical skill that defined Klein's career as a master of the etching medium.
