A 1895 lithograph by Gustav Klimt, featuring a stylised female figure playing a lyre in a minimalist, two-tone graphic composition.
Musik is a lithograph by the Austrian artist Gustav Klimt, produced in 1895. It represents an early phase in the artist's career, predating the highly decorative gold-leaf works for which he is widely recognised. The composition features a female figure in profile, engaged with a lyre. Her form is rendered with clean, bold lines that prioritise silhouette and graphic clarity over anatomical realism.
The work reflects the aesthetic concerns of the Vienna Secession, a group Klimt helped establish. The artist employs a limited colour palette, using a warm, muted red against a pale yellow ground. This choice of colour creates a flat, two-dimensional effect, typical of the influence of Japanese woodblock prints on European artists at the turn of the century. The figure's posture is static, and the lack of background detail keeps the focus entirely on the interaction between the musician and her instrument.
Klimt's signature, visible in the lower right corner, is integrated into the design, echoing the lettering styles popularised by the Secessionist movement. The print demonstrates a transition from traditional academic training toward the stylised, symbolic approach that defined his later output. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Klimt achieves a sense of calm and focus. The work is an example of the graphic arts produced by the Secessionists to disseminate their aesthetic ideals to a wider audience beyond the gallery walls. It remains a clear study in balance, line, and the reduction of form to its essential components.
