An early Renaissance engraving depicting the personification of Music, surrounded by instruments and seated upon a swan, from the E-Series Tarocchi.
This engraving, titled 'Musicha', belongs to the E-Series Tarocchi, a collection of fifty prints produced in Italy during the late fifteenth century. Despite the name, these cards were not intended for gaming. Instead, they functioned as an educational tool, representing a structured worldview through five groups: the conditions of man, Apollo and the Muses, the liberal arts, cosmic principles, and the virtues. This specific print depicts the personification of Music, one of the seven liberal arts. The figure is shown seated upon a swan, a creature traditionally associated with harmony and the arts. She plays a flute, surrounded by various instruments including a portative organ, a lute, and a small harp. The composition is framed by a simple geometric border, typical of the E-Series style, which prioritises clarity and didactic purpose over complex spatial depth. The line work is precise, reflecting the technical capabilities of early Italian intaglio printing. The artist employs a clear, linear approach to define the drapery of the figure's robes and the anatomical details of the swan. Historically, the E-Series Tarocchi are attributed to an anonymous workshop in Ferrara. These prints provide insight into the intellectual climate of the Italian Renaissance, where classical mythology and medieval scholasticism merged. The inclusion of the Roman numeral XXVI and the letter C identifies the print's position within the series, specifically within the category of the liberal arts. The work remains a significant example of early printmaking, demonstrating how visual media were used to disseminate knowledge and cultural values to a literate audience during the Quattrocento.
