A woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada depicting Muraogi from the series The False Murasaki's Rustic Genji, showcasing traditional Edo-period fashion and narrative style.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Kunisada depicts the character Muraogi, a figure from the popular literary series 'The False Murasaki's Rustic Genji' (Nise Murasaki Inaka Genji). This work, authored by Ryutei Tanehiko, reimagined the classic 'Tale of Genji' within the contemporary setting of the Edo period. Kunisada, a prolific master of the Utagawa school, produced numerous prints for this series, which enjoyed immense popularity among the urban population of Edo.
The composition features a seated woman positioned beside a go board, her gaze directed away from the game. She wears a kimono decorated with butterfly motifs, a detail that reflects the fashion sensibilities of the time. Beside her stands a tall, hexagonal lantern, which provides a vertical element to the scene. In the upper left corner, a small inset portrait of a man appears within a cloud-like frame, a common device in Japanese prints to suggest a connection between characters or to indicate a memory or thought. The print employs the characteristic flat perspective and bold outlines associated with the Ukiyo-e tradition.
Kunisada demonstrates his skill in capturing the nuances of textile patterns and facial expressions. The colour palette remains restrained, relying on soft earth tones, muted blues, and black ink to define the forms. The inclusion of calligraphy and various seals provides context regarding the publisher and the series title. This print offers a glimpse into the intersection of literature, fashion, and visual art in nineteenth-century Japan, capturing a moment of quiet contemplation within a narrative framework that captivated readers of the era.
