A detailed chiaroscuro woodcut by Andrea Andreani depicting the Roman hero Mucius Scaevola demonstrating his resolve before King Lars Porsena.
This chiaroscuro woodcut by Andrea Andreani depicts the Roman legend of Gaius Mucius Scaevola. According to historical accounts, Mucius attempted to assassinate the Etruscan king Lars Porsena during a siege of Rome. Upon his capture, he demonstrated his resolve by thrusting his right hand into a sacrificial fire, an act of defiance that earned him the cognomen Scaevola, meaning left-handed.
Andreani, a master of the chiaroscuro technique, employs multiple woodblocks to create tonal depth. The print relies on varying shades of ink to suggest volume and light, moving away from simple line work to achieve a painterly effect. The composition is structured around the central altar, where the flames rise to meet the hand of the protagonist. To the left, the seated king observes the event with a mix of authority and shock, while the right side of the frame is occupied by the stoic figure of Mucius and his captors. The background features a distant landscape, typical of the period, which provides a sense of scale to the immediate drama.
The print demonstrates the technical precision required for multi-block printing in the late sixteenth century. Andreani was instrumental in popularising this method in Italy, often reproducing works by other masters to reach a wider audience. The decorative elements on the altar and the classical armour worn by the soldiers reflect the aesthetic values of the Italian Renaissance. This work remains a clear example of the narrative power of printmaking during this era, capturing a moment of extreme physical sacrifice through a sophisticated layering of ink and shadow.
