A detailed pencil and wash study of Mount Sturgeon and the Wannon River by Eugene von Guerard, capturing the rugged beauty of the Victorian Grampians.
Eugene von Guerard, an Austrian-born artist who settled in Australia, produced this detailed study during his time documenting the Australian wilderness. The work depicts the distinctive silhouette of Mount Sturgeon, a prominent peak in the Grampians range, set against the Wannon River. Von Guerard utilised his training in the European academic tradition to capture the specific geological features of the region with precision. His approach to the Australian environment often combined scientific observation with the aesthetic sensibilities of the Romantic period.
The composition balances the imposing mass of the mountain with the reflective surface of the water in the foreground. The artist employed subtle tonal variations to suggest the texture of the scrub and the atmospheric quality of the sky. By focusing on the interplay between the rugged terrain and the river, the drawing provides a record of the Victorian interior during the mid-nineteenth century. The inclusion of small, precise details, such as the vegetation along the riverbank and the birds in flight, demonstrates his technical control over the medium. This work reflects the broader interest in colonial exploration and the documentation of new territories that defined much of the artistic output of the era. The drawing remains a clear example of the topographical style that von Guerard brought to his colonial subjects, prioritising clarity and structural accuracy over dramatic interpretation. It serves as a visual document of the Grampians before significant European settlement altered the area.
