This woodblock print by Isoda Koryūsai depicts a domestic scene featuring a woman identified as Mrs. Tō, accompanied by another figure and a small child. Koryūsai, a former samurai who transitioned to the life of a professional artist, became a prolific producer of ukiyo-e prints during the mid-Edo period. His work often focused on the lives of women, ranging from courtesans to domestic subjects.
The composition employs the characteristic flat perspective of the period. The figures are arranged in a quiet, interior space, defined by simple architectural lines and the presence of a window frame. The child, positioned in the foreground, reaches upward toward the seated women, creating a sense of interaction that anchors the narrative. The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted earth tones, soft greens, and faded reds, which is typical of the printing techniques available in the late eighteenth century.
Koryūsai was known for his mastery of the hashira-e (pillar print) format, though this work demonstrates his ability to manage multi-figure compositions within a standard vertical frame. The lines are delicate, capturing the folds of the kimono and the gentle expressions of the subjects without unnecessary ornamentation. The print reflects the aesthetic values of the ukiyo-e school, which prioritised the depiction of everyday life and the fleeting moments of the floating world.
