A tender portrait by John Hoppner depicting Hester Jane Ogle and her son, Charles, rendered in a soft, atmospheric style typical of late eighteenth-century British portraiture.
John Hoppner, a contemporary and rival of Thomas Lawrence, produced this portrait of Hester Jane Ogle, the second wife of the playwright Richard Brinsley Sheridan, alongside her young son, Charles Brinsley Sheridan. The composition reflects the late eighteenth-century British tradition of the informal, sentimental portrait. Hoppner places his subjects within a darkened, atmospheric woodland setting, a choice that directs the viewer's attention to the figures through a soft, focused light.
Hester Jane Ogle is depicted in a relaxed pose, her gaze directed away from the viewer, while her son leans against her, his expression direct and inquisitive. Hoppner employs a painterly technique, using loose brushwork to define the folds of their garments and the surrounding foliage. The palette is dominated by earthy tones, including deep ochre, muted greens, and soft browns, which contrast with the pale skin tones of the mother and child. This approach creates a sense of intimacy and naturalism, moving away from the rigid formality often associated with earlier portraiture of the period.
The work captures a moment of domestic quietude. Hoppner demonstrates his skill in managing light and shadow, a technique that provides the figures with a sense of volume and presence. The painting remains a representative example of the portraiture style favoured by the British aristocracy and gentry at the turn of the nineteenth century, focusing on the emotional connection between parent and child rather than the display of status or wealth. The loose, fluid application of paint suggests the influence of earlier masters like Joshua Reynolds, yet Hoppner maintains a distinct approach to the texture of the fabric and the soft rendering of the woodland background.
