A refined eighteenth-century portrait of Anna Barrett by John Singleton Copley, captured in delicate pastel on paper.
This portrait of Anna Barrett, later Mrs. Henry Hill, is a fine example of John Singleton Copley's mastery of the pastel medium during his early career in colonial Boston. Executed around 1763, the work captures the sitter with a directness that became a hallmark of Copley's portraiture. Unlike his later, more elaborate oil paintings produced in London, this pastel demonstrates a delicate handling of light and texture, particularly in the rendering of the sitter's lace trim and the soft sheen of her blue wrap.
Anna Barrett is depicted in a three-quarter view, her gaze meeting the viewer with composure. The composition is restrained, focusing on the sitter's features and her refined attire. She wears a floral-patterned gown, accented by a bright blue shawl draped over her shoulder. Her hair is styled in an updo, adorned with a decorative floral headpiece. A multi-strand pearl choker rests against her neck, providing a subtle contrast to the muted tones of the background.
Copley was largely self-taught, yet he achieved a level of technical proficiency that allowed him to capture the social standing of the Boston elite. His ability to render fabrics and personal ornaments with precision made him the preferred artist for the merchant class of the era. This portrait reflects the influence of European portrait traditions, which Copley studied through imported prints and the works of visiting artists. The use of pastel allowed for a soft, luminous quality that complements the sitter's youthful appearance. The work remains a significant document of mid-eighteenth-century American fashion and social history, preserved with the clarity and attention to detail that defined Copley's output before his permanent move to England in 1774.
