A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Johannes Visscher, depicting a pastoral scene where a mounted farmer offers alms to a young boy.
This etching by Johannes Visscher captures a quiet moment of rural life, characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age. The composition features a farmer on horseback, pausing on a path to offer alms to a young boy. The scene is populated by figures and livestock, including cattle and sheep, which suggest a pastoral setting. Visscher, a member of a prominent family of engravers and printmakers, demonstrates technical precision in his use of line to define the textures of clothing, animal hides, and the surrounding terrain.
The work is based on a painting by Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem, whose influence is visible in the arrangement of the figures and the treatment of the open sky. The inclusion of Latin text at the bottom of the print provides a moralising context, a common feature in seventeenth-century Dutch prints. This text reflects on the contentment of the rustic life, contrasting the simple existence of the farmer with the complexities of courtly life. The etching employs varied line weights to create depth, from the fine hatching in the clouds to the heavier, more deliberate strokes that define the foreground figures and the resting dog.
As a printmaker, Visscher was skilled at translating the painterly qualities of Berchem’s work into the medium of etching. The balance between the human interaction and the surrounding animals creates a narrative that feels both observed and composed. The print serves as a record of the period's interest in rural subjects, which were popular among collectors who valued depictions of everyday life and the natural world. The clarity of the etching process allows for a high level of detail, ensuring that the expressions of the figures and the posture of the animals remain legible even in this monochrome format.
