A traditional Chinese ink on silk painting depicting a mountainous river scene with architectural elements and atmospheric depth.
This work presents a traditional Chinese mountain and water composition, known as Shan Shui. The artist employs ink on silk to create a layered view of a river valley. The composition follows a vertical format, common in classical Chinese scroll painting, where the eye travels from the foreground structures and bridge upwards into the misty, mountainous terrain.
The foreground features architectural elements positioned near the water, with a wooden bridge extending into the lower left corner. These structures provide a sense of scale against the towering rock formations that dominate the right side of the frame. The artist uses varying ink washes to suggest depth, with darker, more defined strokes for the trees and crags, and lighter, translucent applications to depict the atmospheric haze that separates the foreground from the distant peaks.
Feng Qiyong, while widely recognised for his academic contributions to the study of classical literature, maintained a practice in traditional painting that adhered to historical techniques. The brushwork here demonstrates a disciplined approach to texture, particularly in the rendering of the rock faces and the foliage. The muted, monochromatic palette is characteristic of the literati tradition, which prioritised the expressive quality of the ink and the calligraphic nature of the brushstroke over realistic colour representation. The silk support adds a subtle sheen and texture to the work, influencing how the ink settles and how the light interacts with the surface. This piece reflects a continuation of long-standing aesthetic values in Chinese art, focusing on the harmony between human-made structures and the natural environment.
