Mountain Scenery with Streams and Pavilions in the Style of Fan Kuan - Wang Jian

A late-career masterpiece by Wang Jian, this ink and colour scroll reinterprets the monumental mountain style of the Northern Song master Fan Kuan.

Wang Jian, a member of the Four Wangs of the early Qing dynasty, produced this work in the final year of his life. The composition pays homage to the Northern Song master Fan Kuan, whose monumental style defined the aesthetic of the eleventh century. Wang Jian employs the characteristic 'raindrop' texture strokes to define the massive, looming mountain forms that dominate the upper register of the scroll. These solid, imposing peaks are balanced by the delicate rendering of pine trees, cascading streams, and secluded pavilions nestled within the lower valleys.

The work reflects the scholarly practice of the Orthodox School, which prioritised the study and reinterpretation of historical masters. Wang Jian demonstrates a mastery of brushwork, using varying ink tones to create a sense of atmospheric depth and spatial recession. The inclusion of calligraphy and seals on the right and left margins provides context regarding the date and the artist's intention to emulate the spirit of earlier traditions. The palette is restrained, relying on subtle washes of colour to complement the ink work, which maintains the focus on the structural integrity of the mountain forms.

This piece is a representative example of the literati tradition, where the act of painting is an intellectual exercise in historical dialogue.
