This six-panel folding screen, attributed to the Muromachi period artist Shūgetsu Tōkan, demonstrates the mastery of suiboku-ga, or ink wash painting. Shūgetsu, a pupil of the renowned Sesshū Tōyō, adopted the aesthetic principles of Chinese Song and Yuan dynasty painting, adapting them to the Japanese context. The composition employs a technique known as haboku, or splashed ink, to suggest the atmospheric presence of mist and distant peaks.

The scene depicts a series of craggy mountains emerging from a dense, ethereal fog. The artist uses varying concentrations of ink to establish depth, with darker, more defined strokes reserved for the foreground rocks and vegetation, while lighter, diluted washes define the distant summits. A small structure is nestled upon a rocky outcrop, providing a sense of scale and human presence within the vast, natural environment. The composition flows across the six panels, creating a continuous narrative of a journey through a mountainous terrain.

Shūgetsu Tōkan was a Zen monk, and his approach to the medium reflects the meditative qualities associated with the practice. The economy of line and the strategic use of negative space, or ma, allow the viewer to complete the scene through their own perception. The paper surface, aged to a warm, neutral tone, provides a subtle backdrop that harmonises with the monochromatic ink palette. This work is a representative example of the ink painting tradition that flourished in Japan during the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, where the focus remained on the capture of the essence of the subject rather than literal representation. The screen format itself serves as a functional architectural element, designed to divide space while providing a contemplative visual experience.
