A serene ink wash painting of Mount Fuji by the Japanese Bunjinga artist Yokoi Kinkoku, capturing the mountain in a soft, atmospheric style.
This ink wash painting by the Japanese artist Yokoi Kinkoku depicts the iconic silhouette of Mount Fuji. Kinkoku, a monk and painter associated with the Bunjinga tradition, often infused his work with a sense of personal observation rather than strict adherence to academic conventions. The composition centres on the mountain, which rises above a misty, atmospheric foreground. The artist employs a restrained palette, using varying densities of ink to suggest the depth of the mountain range and the softness of the clouds.
In the foreground, rocky outcrops and sparse, windswept trees provide a sense of scale. Small boats are visible on the water, adding a human element to the vast, quiet scene. The brushwork is characteristic of Kinkoku, who favoured a fluid, expressive style that prioritised the mood of the location over precise topographical accuracy. The calligraphic inscription on the left side of the silk provides a poetic commentary, a common feature in literati painting that integrates text with the visual image to create a unified experience.
Kinkoku spent much of his life travelling, and his works often reflect the sights he encountered during his pilgrimages. This piece captures the mountain in a moment of stillness, with the ink washes creating a soft, ethereal quality that defines the Bunjinga aesthetic. The use of negative space allows the viewer to focus on the interplay between the solid form of the mountain and the transient nature of the mist. This print preserves the subtle tonal shifts of the original silk, offering a clear view of the artist's technique and his approach to capturing the spirit of the Japanese countryside.
