A 1896 lithographic poster by Théophile Steinlen featuring the cabaret duo Mothu and Doria, originally published in the Les Maîtres de l'Affiche series.
This lithograph by Théophile Steinlen, originally produced in 1896, captures the theatrical spirit of late nineteenth-century Paris. It was featured as plate 46 in the celebrated 'Les Maîtres de l'Affiche' series, a publication that documented the finest examples of poster design from the era. The image depicts the cabaret duo Mothu and Doria, known for their comedic performances in the Montmartre district.
Steinlen employs a characteristic economy of line to define the figures. The gentleman on the left, dressed in a top hat and a distinctive checked cape, offers a light to his companion. The second figure, wearing a cap and a dark jacket with a red scarf, leans in to accept the flame. The composition is set against a muted, textured background that suggests the dim lighting of a Parisian street or stage. The typography is integrated into the design, reflecting the graphic sensibilities of the period.
Steinlen was a frequent observer of Parisian life, often documenting the working classes, street performers, and the nightlife of the city. His work demonstrates a keen eye for character and gesture. By focusing on the specific interaction between the two performers, he conveys a sense of intimacy and camaraderie. The palette is restrained, relying on subtle tones to draw attention to the figures and the bold lettering. This print offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the Belle Époque, where commercial advertising and fine art frequently overlapped. The work remains a representative example of the lithographic techniques employed by the Imprimerie Chaix, which was responsible for printing many of the most iconic posters of the time.
