A detailed hand-coloured engraving by Johann Sadeler I depicting the biblical miracle of Moses providing water for the Israelites in the desert.
This hand-coloured engraving depicts the biblical account from Exodus 17, where Moses provides water for the Israelites in the desert. Johann Sadeler I, a member of a prominent family of Flemish engravers, demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of the period. The composition follows a narrative structure, placing the central miracle of the water flowing from the rock alongside the immediate aftermath, where the people gather the supply in various vessels.
The scene is populated with numerous figures, including men, women, and children, all rendered with the elongated proportions and expressive gestures typical of Northern Mannerism. The colour palette is applied with care, using muted tones to define the garments and the arid environment, while the water itself is rendered with lighter, cooler shades to provide visual contrast. In the foreground, a man pours water into a basin, while a mother tends to a child, grounding the miraculous event in human activity. Camels and tents in the background provide context for the nomadic setting of the Israelites.
Sadeler was known for his ability to translate complex theological narratives into accessible visual formats. This work reflects the collaborative nature of print production in the late sixteenth century, often involving publishers like Gerard de Jode, whose name appears at the base of the print. The inclusion of Latin and French text beneath the image serves to guide the viewer through the scriptural reference, a common practice in devotional prints of the era. The engraving captures a sense of movement and urgency, as the figures react to the sudden appearance of the spring. The balance between the naturalistic depiction of the figures and the stylised treatment of the rocky terrain creates a distinct visual rhythm across the page.
